Tournament Bracket Generator Double Elimination
In a double elimination tournament nobody is out until they lose twice. That makes it fairer than single elimination, but the losers bracket is tricky to build by hand — who drops where, and when. This generator builds the whole thing for 3 to 64 entrants, handles byes, and lets you click winners so the bracket fills itself in.

How double elimination works
- Everyone starts in the winners (upper) bracket.
- Losing a match in the winners bracket drops you into the losers (lower) bracket.
- Losing a match in the losers bracket eliminates you.
- The winners bracket champion (unbeaten) meets the losers bracket champion (one loss) in the grand final.
- If the losers bracket champion wins the grand final, both finalists now have one loss, so a second “bracket reset” match decides the title. Some events play a single grand final instead.
Because every team except the champion loses exactly twice (and the champion loses at most once), a double elimination event with N entrants has 2N − 2 matches, or 2N − 1 if the reset match is played. That is roughly twice as many as single elimination (N − 1).
How the losers bracket is built
| Losers round | Who plays |
|---|---|
| Round 1 | Losers of winners round 1 play each other |
| Round 2 | Survivors play the losers dropping from winners round 2 |
| Round 3 | Survivors play each other (halving the field) |
| Round 4 | Survivors play the losers dropping from winners round 3 |
| … | Alternating “drop-in” and “halving” rounds |
| Losers final | Survivor plays the loser of the winners final |
A losers bracket has 2(k − 1) rounds, where k is the number of winners bracket rounds. The generator alternates the order in which dropping teams are placed, a common way to reduce the chance of an immediate rematch between teams that just met.
Byes and odd numbers
Brackets work in powers of two: 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. With 7 entrants the bracket has 8 slots and one bye; with 12 it has 16 slots and four byes. Byes go to the top seeds in the first round — seed 1 is paired with the highest slot number, which is a bye if there aren’t enough entrants. The generator advances teams with byes automatically, and handles the empty slots that byes create in the losers bracket, so you only click real matches.
Seeding
Standard seeding places the strongest entrants so they can only meet late: in an 8-team bracket the first-round pairings are 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6, and seeds 1 and 2 are in opposite halves. List your entrants from strongest to weakest to use seeding, or choose a random draw for casual events. For club events you might seed from last season’s results, a ranking list or a round-robin qualifying stage.
Worked example: 8 teams
Eight teams make a 3-round winners bracket (4 + 2 + 1 = 7 matches) and a 4-round losers bracket (2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6 matches), plus the grand final — 14 matches, which matches 2 × 8 − 2. If the losers bracket champion wins the grand final, the reset makes 15. Planning for 15 matches with 30-minute games on two courts, allow about four hours including breaks, keeping in mind that the final matches must be played one after another.
Double vs single elimination vs round robin
| Format | Matches for 8 teams | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | 7 | Quick, simple, dramatic | One bad game ends your event |
| Double elimination | 14–15 | Fairer: everyone plays at least twice | Longer; losers bracket teams play more games |
| Round robin | 28 | Everyone plays everyone; best measure of strength | Many matches; possible dead rubbers |
| Pools then knockout | Varies | Balance of games and drama | More complex to schedule |
Scoring the bracket in the generator
Click a name in any match to mark it as the winner; click again to undo. Winners move forward in the winners bracket and losers drop to the correct slot in the losers bracket automatically. Matches that are still waiting show where each side will come from, such as “Winner M3” or “Loser M6”, which is handy when announcing the next games. If the losers bracket champion wins the grand final, the reset match appears; if the winners bracket champion wins, it is marked as not needed. Changing the entrant list or the seeding clears the results, because the pairings change.
Running the event
- Number every match (the generator does this) and call them in order — matches in different brackets can run in parallel on separate courts or tables.
- Losers bracket teams may have to play back-to-back; build in rest time.
- Agree tie-break and forfeit rules before starting.
- Decide in advance whether the grand final has a bracket reset.
- Keep the printed bracket visible so players know where they go next.

Frequently asked questions
How many games are in a double elimination tournament?
2N − 2 for N entrants, or 2N − 1 if the bracket reset is played.
What is a bracket reset?
A second grand final played when the losers bracket champion beats the unbeaten winners bracket champion.
How do byes work in double elimination?
Top seeds skip the first round when the number of entrants isn’t a power of two; the generator advances them automatically.
How many rounds is a 16-team double elimination bracket?
4 winners rounds, 6 losers rounds and the grand final (plus a possible reset).
Can I use it for 5 or 6 players?
